Wardrobe for Opportunity In January 2007, Wardrobe for Opportunity was chosen as the focus of our branch project. Wardrobe for Opportunity is a volunteer-based, nonprofit organization that provides professional clothing and career support to low-income jobseekers in the Bay Area so they can secure employment and become economically self-sufficient. Back in September 2006 we set out to explore ways in which our branch could become more visibly active as a resource focused on helping at risk women and girls. Our goals were to partner with an existing program and to energize and encourage a sense of community among our members through community involvement. After researching several programs, we chose WFO as an organization that is best aligned at this time with AAUW goals and the diverse experience and interests of our members. Options for Volunteering There a several options for contributing your time and talent, e.g., Personal Shopper, helping clients select suitable business outfits, Apparel Management, using fashion skills to manage inventory, WFO Special Events, Mentoring women who are employed. Branch members volunteer on third Monday of the month at the WFO botique in Concord at 2051 Harrison Street, Suite A, Concord 94520. Contact: Andy Gibson. Another group volunteers on the first Saturday of the month at WFO Oakland boutique - 570 14th St., Suite 5, Oakland. Tech Trek Tech Trek is a week-long residential math/science camp for seventh grade girls. Tech Trek is entering it's tenth year in 2007 with camp sites at Stanford University, Mills College and UC Santa Barbara. Science, math, and technology are major fields where women are presently underrepresented but fields where they can and do succeed. The goal of Tech Trek is to provide a fun yet educational experience that will expand the minds of the middle-school age girls who attend, allow campers to experience hands-on experiments and field trips related to math and science, live on a college campus, get acquainted with other girls who think science is fun, and meet female role models in math, science, technology.
