Livermore-Pleasanton-Dublin Branch
Scholarships
LOCAL
SCHOLARSHIPS
The LPD branch offers scholarships to local women embarked on their
Junior or Senior year of undergraduate studies. In 1990, the foundation
was established as a 501 (c)(3) charitable foundation under California
law. Its name was
changed in 1999 to Livermore-Pleasanton-Dublin
Local Scholarship Foundation . All donations to the foundation are
tax-deductible. The fundraiser each year is a
NON-Event.
The branch offers several scholarships each year to women who have
graduated from local high schools or are residents of the communities
of Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin and Sunol. Women are encouraged to
submit applications during the application period (January through
March). Applications are available at: AAUW-LPD Scholarships, P.O. Box
661, Livermore, CA 94551. Scholarships are awarded in the spring for
the following academic year.
The LPD branch also supports two other 501(c)(3) foundations: The AAUW Educational Foundation
(fellowships, research and project grants, the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund),
and the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund
(litigant support gender discrimination/harassment cases in higher
education). For more information about them, you may also go to the
AAUW California website.
LPD Local Scholarship Fundraiser
Fundraiser Chair: Beverly Howell
The LPD local scholarship program raises funds with a NON-Event each
year. Branch members get a letter
asking them to sign up for an imaginary event. No work. No attendance.
Just monetary support. The response to the letter is a donation that
helps local women who are in their junior or senior years of college
complete their education.
The scholarships are administered by the branch's tax deductible
foundation, the LPD AAUW LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION. The actual number of scholarships is
determined by the Scholarship Committee according to the need and
excellence of the applicants. $5000 in scholarships were given out in
the 2009/2010 year to two students.

LPD Local Scholarship Foundation
The LPD
AAUW Local Scholarship Foundation (formerly LPD AAUW Foundation for
Education) began as the branch scholarship committee. For over 30
years, our branch has annually raised funds and awarded scholarships.
In 1990, the branch established the foundation to facilitate
tax-deductible donations. Members of the branch and community may
donate to the foundation. Each year the Livermore-Pleasanton-Dublin
branch scholarship committee recommends the scholarship recipients and
the foundation awards the scholarships. The foundation may also review
applications from the branch to fund local projects benefiting
education. There are currently five members of the board serving
staggered two-year terms.
Mae Tilles, the initial scholarship chair, suggested that the branch
award scholarships to women in their final two undergraduate years.
Applicants must either live in the Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, or
Sunol communities, or have completed their high school education in
local schools. Scholarship recipients are invited to a branch meeting
in June or September, where branch members may meet those selected.
Each year, members of the branch may serve on the scholarship
committee. The committee chair notifies colleges and universities of
the availability of scholarships and solicits applications. Following
the application deadline, the scholarship committee reviews
applications and chooses the recipients. The foundation then funds the
scholarship(s).
Since the branch began awarding scholarships in the 1950s, over $38,000
has been presented to more than 80 recipients. Money raised each year
by the non-event fundraiser is used to
fund scholarships for the following year.
