Census Lists or Revision Lists

The most widely available records for Volga Germans are the Census Lists, called Revision Lists by the Russian government. These records form the genealogical backbone for each village. Many censuses were taken from the 1760's to 1857. What censuses are available for which village vary widely. This is due to the fact than some censuses have been lost or destroyed. Besides the Original Settler List (1767 census), censuses were taken in the years of 1769, 1775, 1798, 1816, 1834, 1850, and 1857. Perhaps censuses were taken for other years. Fortunately AHSGR has acquired the 1798 census for all original villages and they are available for purchase in 2 formats.

All villages are published in 1798 Census of the German Colonies along the Volga Economy, Population, and Agriculture by Brent Mai. All 38,800 individuals living in 101 Volga German villages are listed and indexed in this 2-volume book set. Individual list of Volga villages are also sold separately along with an index.
Both of these products have been published by the American Historical Society of Germans From Russia (AHSGR), and is available in their online store. The American Historical Society of Germans From Russia (AHSGR) web site is located at: http://www.ahsgr.org/.

The information in the censuses usually included the name and age of head of household and other members of the family, and relationship to the head of household. For males only their age at the last census was listed. For any male deaths, the death year was noted. When a women disappeared from a census it was not know if she married or died. Some censuses included the maiden name (gebouren) of the wife and some did not. Also some censuses included the full baptismal name of the males and some did not.

From the censuses, the exact birth year of the person was not known because the only information provided was their age. So depending on when the census was taken in the year and that person's birth month, their age could vary. Generally the censuses were taken late in the year. Also the 1798 census appears to actually be a 1799 census for the village of Yagodnaya Polyana so perhaps that is true in some other villages.

A complete list of the 204 heads of households for the Shcherbakovka / Tcherbakovka (aka Muehlberg) in the 1850 Census can be found here.
