Family Lists or Administrative
Village lists or Civil Lists
Family Lists or Administrative Village lists or Civil Lists are similar to the
civil registers in Germany which began in the late 1800s and typically lists one
family per page.
All the census taken before 1860 were called Revision lists and were taken from
the Treasury Department in Russia. Anything after that time, starting about 1874
were, Family lists for village administration. Their contents and style were
basically the same as the census when they were started. Some family lists were
expanded through the years, possibly because these books were kept in the villages.
Information that might be added to these books over the years could include
movement between villages, military service, births, marriages and deaths.
Not as many of these records have been located like the census records although
in recent years more have been discovered. Probably many more exist in the
archives than we are aware of.
It is know that there are family lists for Liebental 1895, Mariental 1895, Graf 1895,
Wittmann (Solothurn), Neu-Yagodnaya 1880 and Yagodnaya Polyana, partial 1897.
The first 4 are published and are available at
research material.

Here an example of a family list for the village of Yagodnaya Polyana. It was
taken in the year 1897. It was somewhat similar to a census except there was
more information. And the other difference was that only one family was
contained on a page. In fact each family took up 3 pages (cover page and 2
pages of specifics with room for 10 family members).
Samples pages from a family list can been seen
here.
For Yagodnaya Polyana only about 50 families were contained in the list that
was found which was a very small percentage of the total population. Perhaps
the other records were lost or destroyed, or perhaps the list was not completed.
Information included was; Surname, First Name, Father's Name (father's first
name only not surname, so the wife's maiden name was not identified on this list),
Sex, Relationship to Head, Age, Marital Status, Occupation, Birthplace, Location
Registered, Place of Residence, Denomination, Primary Language, Education: Read
School, Income: Primary Secondary and Military Status. Hopefully over time more
of these family lists will be located.
Special thanks to Brent Mai, Vera Beljakova-Miller, Ken Stugart and Kevin Rupp
who have generously shared their knowledge about Volga German genealogical records
and have worked diligently to make this information available to all Volga German
researchers.
