Genealogical Records
There are a surprising number of genealogical resources available
from Russia about
the Volga Germans. Some of the records have been published, some are available
by inquiry and other records are not easily obtained.
There are 6 types of records from Russia that contain valuable genealogical
records.
These are:
Kuhlberg Ship Lists**
Transport Lists*
Original Settler Lists (Original Immigrant Lists or 1767 Census Lists)**
Census Lists (Revision Lists), 1798*
Church Records
Family Lists (Administrative Village Lists or Civil Lists)
Additionally miscellaneous documents can sometimes turn up, such as passport
applications or military records.
Typically for each original Volga village established between 1764-1767
(also know as mother colonies) only some of these lists are available.
The most widely available records are the census (revision lists) and
the 1798 census has been published for every village in 2 formats by AHSGR.
The most valuable records, from a genealogical perspective are the church
records because of the depth of information. The availability of these
varies widely from village to village.

It is best to work with an AHSGR
Village Coordinator (if there is one) to determine what records are
available for a village and what has already been obtained. The period of
time after 1857, the date of the last census, is generally the most difficult
to research. Recently though, with the discovery of more church records,
and some civil records, that time period is becoming less of a mystery.
Vital records were not kept by the Russian government. Therefore there are not
any individual birth, death or marriage certificates available. The most similar
records were the church records and the availability of these are very erratic.
Special thanks to Brent Mai, Vera Beljakova-Miller, Ken Stugart and Kevin Rupp
who have generously shared their knowledge about Volga German genealogical
records and have worked diligently to make this information available to all
Volga German researchers.
