Search Tips
How to use these Search boxes
This powerful search tool will search thousands of names on many different Volga
web sites in seconds. Search for your surname, village name or whatever you
choose by entering the word into one of the search boxes and pressing Go! or Search.
The search box on the home page will mainly search
this Volga Germans web site and just a few other sites.
The other 3 search box on the search page
covers different Volga web sites. 500 web pages is the limit for each search box.
Since there are 1,500 web pages, the search was divided into three search boxes.
If you only search in the first or second box, you could be missing information
about your ancestors. The second search box indexes the Argentina web sites.
The search will find EXACT matches only.
To search for more than one word,
such as a first name and a surname try entering it two different ways. Click on the
exact phrase radio button and then try entering it as:
firstname lastname
and
lastname, firstname (with the comma)
Matches will be returned in a list on one or more pages. If any of the
entries are of interest simply click on the link and it will take you to the
page where the match was found. It will NOT take you to the exact entry, just
to the page. Then use the FIND in your browser (usually under Edit in the top
menu) to find the matching word(s) on the page.
What the Search box cannot find
The search box will not find a name that contains part of a word. For example,
if you entered Rosent into the search box to find either Rosental or Rosenthal
there will not be any matches. But if you enter Rosental or Rosenthal there
will be matches for each specific spelling of the name.
These search boxes do NOT search the AHSGR web site. The AHSGR site has its
own search capabilities so be sure to check there for additional Volga resources.
No wild cards are allowed in the search.

Spelling Tips
Search for ALL possible spellings of the name.
Commonly switched letters are:
Y & J sample Jost = Yost
C & K sample Clausser = Klausser
V & F sample Veller = Feller
For names with umlauts the proper spelling would be : ä = ae, ö = oe, ü = ue.
As an example the surname Görlitz should be spelled Goerlitz. But Görlitz is
just as commonly spelled Gorlitz, or Gerlitz so be sure to look for those
spelling variations.
If a name can be spelled with a th also search for the name with just a t
such as Rosenthal and Rosental.
Double letters are often changed to single letters such as Sackmann to Sackman.
Endings such as dt in Schmidt can be changed to tt such as Schmitt or t such as Schmit.
Vowels are frequently changed, including y. Meyer could be Myer or Meier.
Troudt could be spelled Trout, Traudt.
Search for phonetic spellings of names, Koch is often spelled Cook and Fuchs
is often spelled Fox. |
