b. 1915, South Russia
From Hillsboro Star Journal - November 27, 2002
Kaethe (pronounced Katie) Warkentin. Born in South Russia in 1915, the oldest of three girls, Kaethe lived through some very tough times. Kaethe grew up and went to high school and college and taught school in Russia. In 1938, the Russian officials took Kaethe's father, and they never saw him again. During World War II, the German army came, and the family left with them for Poland. In 1943, she and some of her family members were sent to Paraguay, where Kaethe taught school and learned Spanish. She also became a principal. It was in Paraguay that Kaethe met her future husband, John Warkentin, from Hillsboro. He was sent by the Mennonite Central Committee to Paraguay to organize the merchants to sell their wares. On Sept. 3, 1942, in Paraguay, they were married. Kaethe came to Hillsboro with her husband. While he went back to managing the locker meat plant that he owned, Kaethe stayed at home for about 10 years to raise their two children. Kaethe taught at Tabor for 17 years. During that time, Kaethe's mother came to live with the family in Hillsboro, after living with Kaethe's two sisters previously. Her mother was in her mid 80s when she came to stay with Kaethe and her family. Kaethe's mother lived in Hillsboro until her death at the age of 98. Kaethe is still active at age 87 as a resident at Parkside. Kaethe said her two sisters, who lived through some of the ordeals she and the family experienced in Russia, are still living. Helen, who is married, has two children and lives in Canada, and Susie, a widow, has five children and lives in Omaha, Neb. Kaethe has two children. Son John Warkentin and wife Julie live in Wichita. With some difficulty the family disposed of their property, and in company of several others, left their home village in November 1921, to go to America. Traveling during the winter months, on foot and by sled, and later by train, they were able to cross the border into Poland. Here the family was divided, first by sickness, and then by death. Alex's mother and a smaller brother and sister were buried in Poland, leaving his father with the five remaining children, Carl, Alex, Mary, Emma and Leah, to continue the journey. After a short stay in Germany, passage was secured on a ship to New York City, where they safely arrived on September 28, 1922, Alex's 18th birthday. By train they traveled to Shattuck, Oklahoma, where they were met by relatives and friends who had immigrated some years before. In 1941, Alex moved to Sacramento, Calif., and that year, July 23, he was united in marriage with Charlotte SCHWABE, a registered nurse.
