BOOK REVIEW

Tragedy Travel Triumph - Story of a Family

Christina R.L. Schell, S.C.I.C.

Sister Christina has written a very interesting personal story of the Schell family. The family lived in Marienberg until 1921. She writes about their life in the village at a time when the Bolsheviks were establishing their hold over Czarist Russia. She relates events and personal memories about her family and the harsh life in the village during that period. On August 2, 1921 her family and eighteen others left Marienberg and traveled across Russia by wagon and then train eventually reaching Minsk in January of 1922. Many interesting details are spelled out about the events of the journey. The Schells along with the other families remained in Minsk until December 9, 1922. Once again she has related many details of how the family managed to exist in very severe conditions. Reaching relative safety in Germany, the family was able to arrange passage to Canada where they all had successful rewarding lives. She also tells of how she was able to contact the family of their eldest sister who was married and remained behind in Streckerau and was eventually deported to Siberia.
