Neu Yagodnaya (New Berry Field) was founded on the Jeruslan River, in the Samara province about 65 miles SE of Saratov in 1855/57? by people primarily from Yagodnaya Polyana. George Kromm stated that 1,620 had gone to Neu Yagodnaya from Yagodnaya Polyana. The other daughter colonies located nearby were Schoental, Schoenfeld, and Schoendorf. Like its mother colony, Neu Yagodnaya was a Lutheran village and was probably served by the Lutheran pastor of Schoental, if there was one. Neu Yagodnaya was commonly called Yagoda or Yakoda. There was a lot of social interaction, visiting relatives, marrying, etc. between the German colonies located on the Jerusulan River and their mother colonies over 100 miles away. People earned their living by farming wheat, rye, and oats along with animal husbandry of cows, horses, camels (yes, camels!) sheep, geese, ducks and chickens. Certain trades appeared such as cobbler, miller, blacksmith, cabinetmaker, teacher, shopkeeper and saloonkeeper. Neu Yagodnaya 1880 censusIt appears that Neu-Yagodnaya has the only known 1880 census in the Volga. The last census in every other Volga village was in 1857. Ne-Yagodnaya was a daughter colony of Yagodnaya Polyana so most of the surnames found in this village are YP surnames. The number following the surnmes represent the number households in the census. A single household often had 3 generations.Yagodnaya Polyana Surnames Appel-6, Asmus-2, Bart-2, Baum-1, Befus-6, Benner-5, Blok-2, Diesing-1, Dippel-1, Felker / Voelker-7, Fischer-3, Fuchs-3, Gerlitz/ Goerlitz/ Gorlitz-2, Goetz-2, Gorr-1, Hartmann-4, Hergert-12, Holstein-7, Jungmann / Yungmann-2, Kaiser-3, Kleweno-6, Koch-11, Konschu-1, Kromm-2, Lautenschlager-3, Leinweber-1, Litzenberger-3, Luft-3, Morasch-2, Machleid / Machleit / Machliet-4, Mueller / Miller-2, Neubert-3, Pfaffenroth / Paffenroth / Poffenroth-1, Ruhl-1, Repp-3, Schaad / Schadt-2, Schaefer-1, Scheuermann-6, Schneidmueller-1, Schneider-6, Schreiner-3, Schuchart-7, Spanenberger-1, Stang-3, Weigant-1, Weitz-1, Wuertz-1, Ziergibel / Zurgibel-3 Non YP surnames Arndt-1, Gagwald-1, Gler,2 Gross-1, Herdt-1, Koppel-1, Lesser-1, Meiber-1, Mosebach-1, Okel-1, Ott-1, Rudy-1, Rupp-1, Schweizer-1, Staitz-1, Stanius-1, Streier-1, Weibert-2, Zentner-1, This census household list was obtained from Dr. Igor Pleve. It appears that some of the Koch household listed below are probably NOT from Yagodnaya Polyana. Those households are: Johannes, Christian and Melchior Koch.

Some known Neu-Yagoda families in America Philip Ruhl, was born on 6 April 1857 in Neu-Yagodnaya. In 1876 he married Marie Elisabeth Zurgibel. In 1891 the family came to Colfax, WA and later settled in Portland, OR. Katie (Katherine) Fuchs Wilhelm of Wheatland, WY (1899-abt. 1997). In 1917 Katie married John Wilhelm of Longmont, CO. John was born in Schoendorf in 1893. Descendants of this couple live around Wheatland, WY and Greeley CO. There is an article by Roberto Konschuh Bierig in the Winter 1989 issue of Usu Leut describing the village. In 1941 the people of the village were deported to Kazakhstan and Siberia. The houses were taken over by Russians or torn down and used for firewood. Little remains except the part of the stone walled schoolhouse which was too difficult to tear down. Village Coordinator |
