United States Research Gems
There are a number of genealogical gems for the Volga German research in the USA. Of course the
premiere site is the American Historical Society
of Germans from Russia (AHSGR).
Besides all the wonderful books, maps and censuses available for purchase there,
the AHSGR website is loaded with many valuable indexes such as the
1913-1915 census of Germans from Russia
in Lincoln, NE by Hattie Plum Williams. This index lists about 1,500 heads of households by village,
as well the year they came to Lincoln and the number in the family. A detailed census can be obtained
from AHSGR of any families found in the index. Additionally you can browse
surname charts that are
available by surname or village. Another very useful index on the site is the
Ancestor List also know as the gedlist.
This is a list of names, sometimes associated with locations
comes from the names submitted in genealogical records to AHSGR. All the names listed on the
website can be searched at one time on the search page.
Consider joining AHSGR to support this organization and help preserve our German Russian heritage.
Germans From Russia on the Trail to Colorado
by Colorado State University
is a fascinating collection oral histories, stunning photos, and maps of Germans from Russia in Colorado.
Actual audio recordings of interviews, some in German are available for listening to on the site.
There is considerable material on the early sugar beet industry and the role of
the Germans from Russia in its early growth, plus a general view of the history of
Colorado from the perspective of this ethnic group. The
photo
of the Volga German woman thinning sugar beets
found on this website was provided courtesy of Colorado State University.
Janet's German Russian Research
and Germans
from Russia Research by Janet Laubhan Flickinger
contain massive indexs of Germans from Russia (mostly Volga Germans). The indexes include naturalization
records, ship lists, church records and census records. Much of the information focuses on Lutheran
Volga Germans that settled in Kansas and Oklahoma.
Germans from Russia Heritage Collection
at North Dakota State University (NDSU) contains a massive collection of articles, photos
and other information about Germans from Russia (GRs) under the guidance of Michael Miller.
NDSU also publishes excellent documentaries including books and videos. Much of the focus
of the site is on the Germans from Russia who settled in North and South
Dakota, primarily from the Black Sea area of Russia, not the Volga. But there is much general information
about GRs as a whole, and some specific information about Volga Germans. This site provides a
wealth of knowledge about GRs returning to Germany. So much information is buried within this site
try using the search function on the home page.
Two interesting sites for Kansas include
Russian Germans in Kansas and
German Russian
Settlements in Ellis and Rush County, KS in 1926.
Just about anything you wanted to know about Volga Germans in Portland can be found at
Germans From Russia in Portland, OR. The
site contains photos, stories, history, covering such topics as churches, neighborhoods, businesses and
customs. Also information about the Volga villages that were represented in Portland can be found there.
The Odessa Digital Library houses a massive
collection of indexes, documents and essays on Germans from Russia. Like the NDSU site, the focus of the site
is Black Sea Germans so information on Volga Germans is minimal. But there is much fascinating information
throughout the site and the Canadian ship list indexes contain a large number of Volga Germans.
It always useful to post your name at the
Email List of German Russian Researchers
and to look for other researchers there.

Other outstanding genealogical gems in the USA are smaller in scope but no less valuable. They range
in from church rosters, cemetery listings, city directories, obituaries, naturalization records
and draft registrations in areas in which there was a large population of Volga Germans. If you are
fortunate enough to ancestors who settled in any of these areas, these indexes can be extremely
helpful.
