I got the name of the NDSU website from a PBS program on the Germans from Russia. I found my grandfather's father, Philip "JP" Weitz, on your website only hours after my grandfather gave me JP's name and his own birthplace. My grandfather spoke German as a first language, but he didn't know what part of Russia his father had come from, when they immigrated, or where they landed. I called him to tell him that I'd found his family and to get information on his sisters and brother for the site. He was so very pleased to know that such records exist! He had just been telling me that he regretted that information like this has not been handed down within our family. All five of the siblings in his family are alive and well in California, and my great-uncle still works in the fields sometimes, at the age of 91. Although my grandfather is in perfect health, at the age of 89 he is slowly fading from the grief of my grandmother's death, and nothing makes him happy the way that family does. Knowing about your website has given him joy and made him feel that his roots and life history do matter in the greater scheme of things. Thank you *so much* for that!

God Bless you! I've known so much of my family history and so little. When the Iron Curtain fell in 1949 my father, Conrad, declared all potentially dead to us. Until that time he had continued to correspond with his sisters. We had a full month of nightly wakes. People from all over came to our home, there were relatives from Endicott, Walla Walla, Calgary and everywhere else. I was in the eighth grade at the time and this left a lasting impression in my mind and heart. The stories I heard and the prayers.....oh, my! I've left all contacts alone until now. All of a sudden as I grow older I ache and reach out to find some of the people I heard about. I was raised by my grandparents so I was pampered by all the "old ones" and they were truly wonderful. Your website is absolutely outstanding.....as I read through it I have chuckled, nodded with recognition so many of the names, and, yes, I have even cried. I will be getting in touch with you again after the first of the year. I was raised in Colfax, Washington and I knew almost all the "old ones" that came from Yagodna. These people formed their own church for their private worship. We had prayer meetings Saturday night, Sunday afternoons, Sunday evenings and Wednesday nights. Oh, the things I could tell you. I won't continue to rattle on.....just, thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!

To start with, I would like to say, "I love this site!" It is so exciting to find information about my family. As I was reading, I found that my grandfather's name wasn't with his family. So, I would like to help correct the information. My grandfather is the third child of Alexander C. Weitz. His name is Victor Weitz and he was born in 1911. The information read that he was "male" and born about 1908. Please let me know if there is any more information I could help you with. Thank you for the wonderful site.

The site is beautifully and informatively set up. It was fabulous to see so much work on the history of the Weitz family acheived. It has excited me to find out more about my heritage and where I have come from. Thank you very much. My family is one of the unconnected, Adam Weitz b. approx 1886 in Yagodnaya and emigrated to Calgary, Canada in approx. 1909-1915 and as of yet we have not been able to get his father or mothers name. His wife was Mary (Marie) Morasch and they had 6 children. Adam died in approx. 1952 in Calgary. Any further help would be apprecciated in connecting this branch to the tree. Thank you very much. Excellent site! Thank you and greetings from another Weitz researcher. "My" Weitz was Karl Heinrich / Charles Henry, a journeyman carpenter b. 1826 who imm. from Schotten, not far from Nidda, in 1850 and came to Iowa in 1855 to establish the Weitz Company, now a large and well-known construction firm. There is some Schotten material here which I would gladly share with those interested.

Trying to locate info on a great-aunt from Yagodnaya Polyana, but unfortunately do not know her name. Her parents were Conrad and Marie Elis. Merkel, and she had a brother & sister-in-law, Johann and Elizabeth (Poffenroth) Merkel. Conrad, Marie Elis., Johann and Elizabeth all immigrated to Calgary, Alberta in 1911, but my aunt stayed behind with her husband and children. The name Merkel is in your family tree, as is Poffenroth, some of whom are my cousins. Any idea on how I could find the missing information? Johann last heard from his sister by letter around 1935 or 1936.

There appears to be several Schmicks who have married with yours; do you have any information on Katherine? My grandfather's name was Alexander Schmick and he was the eldest of 10 children. I also found the picture of Marie Elisabeth fascinating--that was my grandmother's name.I also know that my family went over on the Elbe in the 1890's. I have just recently been discovering my Paffenroth family history. I have learned that the Pfaffenroths also came from Kidda and were original founders of Yagodyana Polyana. My grandmother was a Lautenschlager. My aunt Mary was born in Russia and married a Luft. My aunt Elizabeth married a Daubert. I found all of these names in the list of village founders and also in your family tree. The Weitz name is new to me but it appears to have been closely intertwined with my family name(s) for at least 200 years.

You have done a fantastic job on the WEITZ family. My grandfather's name was VEATS and he was from England, but it seems that the name was originally WEITZ. I have gone back as far as Peter Veats whose wife was Mary. He would have immigrated to England from Germany. They had 3 sons who were all christened in 1832 in England. Peter would probably have been born around 1788. Maybe you or one of your readers could be of assistance. Thank you.
