Obituaries

A major source of obituaries for the people of Yagodnaya Polyana (Yagoda) is the Lutheran Kirchenbote. Lutheran pastors wrote and submitted the obituaries to the Kirchenbote. These obituaries are in German and are printed in an old German script. Generally it is possible to pick out names, dates, relationships (bruder, mutter) from the text without knowing German. The American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (AHSGR) maintains a paper based file of about 200,000 obits of Germans Russians and their descendants. AHSGR is starting to put an index of the obituaries online. It includes obits from the Kirchenbote and other sources although it is only as complete as the information that was submitted to them. AHSGR will translate obits for a nominal fee.

Some cemeteries maintain a file of obituaries. Riverside Cemetery in Oshkosh, WI, a large city owned cemetery has obits starting in the 1930s although the cemetery is much older. There are even a few newspaper on-line that carry obituaries, although this is fairly recent. The most significant source of obituaries on-line for the people of Yagodnaya Polyana is the searchable database of the Calgary Herald. The database started in July 1998 and has one Weitz name. Rootsweb maintains the Obituary Daily Times which also has names from Yagoda. This is an index, and does not have the complete text.

Some Weitz families became Seventh Day Adventists when they came to the USA. The Seventh Day Adventists maintain a searchable online database of obituaries. A few Weitz individuals are listed there as well as many other people from Yagoda.

Canada leads the way with putting cemeteries online. The Alberta Family Histories Society has an index of many cemeteries in Alberta, Canada. The two that that had the most names from Yagoda was Burnsland (a few Weitz) and Didsbury at that site.

The Weitz obituaries listed here are the complete text, if it is available and in English. If the text is in German then a few key points are listed.
